Cream $16.03 A Melody Maker journalist throughout the 1960s and'70s, Chris Welch is perhaps uniquely qualified to tell the story of Cream, the first supergroup worthy of the name. Emerging from the'60s British jazz, pop, and blues scenes, the trio, formed by Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce, and Eric Clapton, made a brief but influential splash in its two-and-a-half-year lifespan, and propelled at least one of its members (Clapton) to future international stardom. The mercurial personalities of its members–Bruce and Baker had been at odds well before the group's inception–made for some incandescent music; the band's lengthy improvisations (initially a necessity due to lack of material) were legendary, Baker in particular being credited (or blamed, depending on your point of view) for the advent of the rock drum solo. With a wealth of intriguing background information from both major and minor participants in the band's story, and additional commentary on the individual players from musicians and writers including XTC guitarist Dave Gregory, CREAM is a timely and entertaining look at a unique'60s phenomenon. |
